Are agate and onyx the same?

The key difference lies in their natural state. Onyx is a calcite-based stone, quarried from the earth in massive blocks. These blocks are sliced into large, coherent slabs, showcasing a seamless flow of parallel bands in hues like honey, green, or pure white. Its elegance is often monolithic and uniform.

Agate, a variety of quartz, forms in concentric, eye-like bands within volcanic rock cavities. Naturally, it occurs in much smaller nodules. To create the large slabs famous in interior design, these individual agate slices are meticulously assembled and stabilized with a resin backing. The result is a stunning panel that reveals a kaleidoscope of intricate, circular patterns and a vibrant spectrum of colors.

In essence, onyx offers a sophisticated, flowing elegance from a single piece of stone. Agate provides a dynamic, artistic tapestry crafted from many smaller pieces. Both are unparalleled in their ability to transform light and space, but they achieve this luxury through entirely different natural narratives.
